TWO POSITIONS ARE OPEN FOR APPLICATION IN UPPSALA, SWEDEN AT THE
UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, DEPARTMENT OF SOIL AND ENVIRONMENT.
The positions are placed in a strong research environment where
molecular analyses constitutes a foundation for integrating theories of
how microorganisms interact with plants, to regulate biological
processes in soils.
(http://www.sciencemag.org/content/339/6127/1615.abstract [1]).
TENURE TRACK POSITION (4 YEARS WITH POSSIBILITIES FOR PERMANENT
EXTENSION)
A position is available as associate senior lecturer in soil biology
with specialization in carbon and nutrient circulation in plant-soil
systems. The holder of the position is expected to establish research in
one of the following areas: soil biochemistry, microbial ecology and
soil ecology, with a focus on the role of soil organic matter in
ecosystem cycling of carbon and plant nutrients. Of particular interest
are studies of soil biological processes that integrate across scales
(from the molecular level to ecosystems) and target interactions between
different ecosystem components.

POST-DOC POSITION ON METATRANSCRIPTOMIC ANALYSIS OF ORGANIC MATTER
DYNAMICS IN FOREST SOILS (2 YEARS)
We look for a post-doc with a degree in biology or biotechnology and a
focus on molecular biology and bioinformatics. The project will explore
the interface between molecular biology and ecology with emphasis on the
development of cutting edge techniques. The holder of the position will
develop and employ bioinformatic methods to analyse high-throughput
sequencing data for expression of selected genetic markers in complex
fungal communities. Gene expression data will be interpreted in a
genomic and phylogenetic context, to test new hypotheses on how soil
fungi regulate organic matter dynamics in forest soils in relation to
soil fertility and forestry. The project also includes a limited share
of field sampling and molecular laboratory work.

GRAD STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES IN GLOBAL CHANGE ECOLOGY
The Yang Lab (https://sib.illinois.edu/yang [4]) in Global Change
Ecology and Stable Isotope Biogeochemistry in the Departments of Plant
Biology and Geology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
seeks creative and motivated graduate students to join the lab in
Summer/Fall 2016. We explore how human activities are changing how
natural and managed ecosystems function and how ecosystem responses to
global change can feedback to fuel or slow future global change. We are
particularly interested in the controls on greenhouse gas emissions, the
effects of
anthropogenic nitrogen inputs on ecosystem nitrogen retention and loss,
the effects of plant community composition shifts on ecosystem nitrogen
and carbon dynamics, and the coupling of biogeochemical cycles beyond
carbon and nitrogen (i.e., iron coupled processes). Students will be
encouraged to develop their own research related to these themes.
Potential local field sites include the Multifunctional Woody
Polyculture research farm, SoyFACE, the Bondville Ameriflux site, and
the Upper Sangamon Basin which is part of the Intensively Managed
Landscapes Critical Zone Observatory. Prospective students are also
encouraged to consider applying for the IGERT program in Vertically
Integrated Training with Genomics
(http://www.igb.illinois.edu/vintg/igert [5]), which provides the
opportunity to develop research at the Smithsonian Tropical Research
Institute in Panama.
There are multiple opportunities to join the lab to pursue a Master’s
or
Ph.D. degree:
(1) Department of Plant Biology
(http://www.life.illinois.edu/plantbio/index.html [6]) – Deadline
January 1
(2) Department of Geology (http://www.geology.illinois.edu/ [7]) –
Deadline
January 15
(3) Program in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology
(http://sib.illinois.edu/peec/ [8]) – Deadline January 1
If you are interested in joining the lab, please email Dr. Wendy Yang at
yangw en illinois.edu. Please include a brief statement of your research
interests and your CV.

STEM Diversity Postdoc at University of Illinois
The Department of Plant Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana
Champaign (http://www.life.illinois.edu/plantbio/ [9]) is accepting
applicants for Post-Doctoral Research Associates for one-year
appointments (renewable up to 3 years). The Department seeks researchers
to promote NSF’s goal of broadening the participation of traditionally
underrepresented and diverse groups.
Post-Doctoral Research Associates are expected to be in residence for
the duration of the appointment and are expected to conduct research in
an established lab with some independent research encouraged. A faculty
mentor will be assigned. The disciplinary field is open, but the
department is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in
landscape/ecosystem ecology and ecological modeling.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree is required.
Individuals working toward a Ph.D. will be considered, but candidate’s
dissertation must be defended and deposited prior to their appointment.
Letters of interest can be sent to Rayme Dorsey, rdorsey en illinois.edu
and should include the following:
• curriculum vitae;
• research areas of interest and specific research plans (if known)
• graduate transcripts (copies are acceptable, but official
transcripts
may be requested at a later date);
• contact information for three professional references who can
emphasize
the unique perspective the candidate might contribute to the
candidate’s
field; and
• possible faculty mentors in Department that fit with candidate’s
interests (if known).
When reviewing applications, faculty reviewers will evaluate candidates
according to the following criteria:
• academic accomplishments,
• strength of their research proposal,
• potential for faculty careers that will contribute to fostering
diversity and equal opportunity,
• identification of appropriate research oversight mentor and the
mentor’s
potential to work productively with the candidate,
• candidate’s commitment to equity and diversity in higher
education.
