The nomination process for the Glinka World Soil Prize 2017 is now open
and organizations and individuals are invited to propose appropriate
candidates. Supported by the Russian Federation, the Prize is awarded
annually under the auspices of the Global Soil Partnership on World Soil
Day, consisting of the Glinka Medal and an award of USD 15,000.

The Glinka World Soil Prize
<http://www.fao.org/global-soil-partnership/pillars-action/2-awareness-raising/glinka-world-soil-prize/en/>
recognizes outstanding achievements and encourages dynamic change-makers
to develop and implement new concepts of land and soil protection. It
also helps raise awareness about the importance of soil functions. As
such, the Prize honours outstanding innovations and contributions made
by either individuals, institutions or organizations to safeguard soil
resources for future generations. It is a unique opportunity for soil
champions to showcase successful examples of improving and promoting the
food and nutrition prospects of the planet’s fast-growing population
and, in turn, our quality of life.

Soils are among the planet’s greatest treasures, and it is important to
promote and reward practices that contribute to their protection. The
Glinka World Soil Prize rewards land-use and soil management practices
that mitigate soil threats like soil degradation, erosion, the reduction
of organic matter, diffuse pollution and contamination, and compaction,
as well as soil biodiversity loss, salinization, sealing, flooding and
landslides.

Promoting sustainable soil management practices is crucial for improving
our food systems, maintaining a healthy environment and ensuring
sustainable rural development. The protection of soil resources from
degradation is also a prerequisite for poverty alleviation, as specified
in the Revised World Soil Charter
