Short-Stature Corn and Other

Frontiers in the Physiology of

Efficiency Improvements in

Modern Hybrids

Autores: Tony Vyn1

Filiación: Wallace Emeritus Professor in Crop Sciences

*Resumen: *Physiological changes underlying maize yield and efficiency
improvements have fascinated crop scientists more focused on physiology and
management than on genetics and plant breeding. In this presentation, I
propose to highlight preliminary research findings from Purdue University
on short-stature corn hybrids in the context of era hybrid changes over the
past four decades in the U.S. Corn Belt. The prospects for further gains in
the nitrogen efficiency and plant density tolerances will be discussed.

*Palabras claves: *Short stature corn, Efficiency, Plant density, Yield

Tony Vyn, is a recently retired professor from the Agronomy Department at
Purdue University in Indiana, USA. Officially, his title is the “Wallace
Emeritus Professor of Crop Sciences” because he was the Henry A. Wallace
Chair in Crop Sciences from 2018 to his retirement in December 2023.
Unofficially, he is a part-time cash-crop farmer in Ontario, Canada who
continues to enjoy cropping systems research. Tony was a faculty member in
the Crop Science Department at Guelph from 1987 until he joined the
Agronomy Department faculty at Purdue University in 1998. During his
25-year career at Purdue, Dr. Vyn and his research team members studied the
physiology of crop (primarily corn) responses to tillage, rotations,
nutrient rate/placement/timing, abiotic stress factors, and plant
populations with modern and era hybrids. Dr. Vyn enjoyed serving as a major
professor to about 45 graduate students. He mentored more international
graduate students and Visiting Scholars from Argentina than from any other
non-North American country.

Certificados: los alumnos que necesiten certificar su asistencia, deberán
enviar su nombre y DNI al moderador (mtexeira en agro.uba.ar) durante el
transcurso del seminario o dentro de la hora posterior a la finalización
del mismo.
